LVG TARGETS TROPHIES
For Louis Van Gaal, what is more important is to bring silverware to the club this season than to try and finish higher in the Premiership.
United’s chances of winning the Premiership are virtually zero and the best that they can do is to earn a place in top 4 which would take them to Europe. But, they can get to Europe by clinching the Europa League too which they are currently in contention of and Van Gaal suggests he would prefer that route.
According to Van Gaal, winning titles is always something that a team should look for rather than anything else. The manager was quoted as saying, “Look, there can’t be anything bigger than a title. But, at the same time, you want to be playing in Europe as well. So, to be in top 4 becomes vital, but, if you win the Europa League, then your position in the Premier League becomes irrelevant as far as your qualification to Europe is concerned.”
“Also, if you see, we have never been able to be the champions of Europa League before and the FA Cup too, the previous occasion that we had it was long back. We haven’t done particularly well in these tournaments in the recent times. So, if we go all the way in one of them or maybe both, the supporters would enjoy it thoroughly.”
On asked what’s that which has turned things around for the Red Devils in terms of form, Van Gaal said that the players have been keeping things simple and backing their own selves and that is helping them at the moment. Whilst you can probably find better odds elsewhere at StanJames, United now have a better chance than ever that they will be kicking off in the Champions League next season, and this mini-turnaround could be the start of something beautiful.
In the words of the 64-year old Netherlands native, “Instead of the coach believing in the players’ abilities, they need to have belief in their abilities themselves because only then, they can get the job done and currently what we are seeing is that they are playing with a lot of self belief.”
