David Beckham Picks up PFA Merit Award
David Beckham has added yet another honour to his trophy cabinet after winning the PFA merit award for his impeccable services to the game.
The 41-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation. In picking up the award, he manages to follow in the footsteps of Ryan Giggs, his former Manchester United teammate. This is the second time become is picking up this award after he became the recipient when it was given to the class of 92, a group of youngsters who progressed through the ranks at Manchester United under the guidance of Alex Ferguson. This award was given in 2013.
Beckham is easily one of the most recognisable players in the world. He recently retired after having represented the likes of Manchester United, AC Milan, Paris St Germain, and Real Madrid. Representing these major clubs has given him the opportunity to win numerous trophies including the Champions League, Premier League, and the La Liga.
At international level, he captained the England national team during the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. He also made 115 appearances for the national team. During his time with England, the national team at least made it to the quarter-finals of each major tournament.
After picking up the award, Beckham stated that he was extremely honoured to be given this coveted prize."The PFA's such an important part of the game, to be awarded this is special. I was lucky to have the career I had, to have played with the teams I played for, with the managers I've had, and obviously the team-mates I've had, it's been a special career for me - 22 years.I played in different countries, and obviously represented my country for the amount of times I did. I feel very blessed," said Beckham after winning the award.
